Once the “as-is” is captured, the next step is to map out the “to-be” processes—how the new system will improve or replace the current system.

Take, for example, a digital transformation project I worked on for an education institute. The institute was adopting a new online learning platform. We began by thoroughly mapping out the current processes, detailing how instructors and students interacted with the old system, from logging grades to managing assignments. By capturing the “as-is” workflows, we could identify gaps that the new platform needed to address.
